Why Customising Your Irons Could Be The Best Investment You Ever Make
In any stick-hits-ball game, your success depends on how efficiently you can wield that stick. Take baseball for example; in America they sell bats grouped by weight, length and handle size. Golf, though, is different. Clubs are generally produced to a standard spec. The trouble is no two humans are the same. Nick Faldo estimates 98% of club golfers are using clubs ill-suited to their swing, height, strength and build.
Nowhere is this more of an issue than with irons. Your power, strike quality and accuracy are all compromised by an ill-fitting set.
o The right shaft creates accuracy, distance and penetration by allowing your swing to create powerful and consistent flex. Its weight also hugely influences your ability to build clubhead speed.
- Shaft material, weight, flex, length and weight distribution can all have a profound affect on your shot.
o The right clubhead affects the ball speed, feel, spin rate, ball fllight, forgiveness and distance. The clubhead can come in a range of different materials, shapes and sizes.
- Are you confident using your longer irons? Could you benefit from a hybrid from even a 6-iron upwards?
o The right lie angle - the angle between the sole and shaft - means the club meets the ball with the sole flush against the ground. If your lies are wrong the heel or the toe will snag, twisting the face.
- Did you also know that your shaft bows in 2 directions when hitting the ball, so if you change your shaft you'll need to change your lie angle!
o The right grip thickness puts the club in the correct proportion of the hands, allowing your wrists to hinge, turn and create powerful leverage.
- If you grip is too thick this could be stopping you square your club face, too thin and it could be inducing over turning wrists.
These are just three elements of an irons fit. Get them wrong and you are doomed before you even start and you could heavily comprise the quality of your swing in order to fit the club.
